Eon Pro...planetary gearing system, was very "advanced" in design and engineering and fast spool. Too MUCH plastic and too high a price tag killed that reel. IMO, not one of the more classic or sought after Swedish Abus.

As note per ROG, this type gearing design has been in use in fishing reels since the mid-1800s.

Here is an old link to the Eon Pro: http://forums.tackletour.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6705

I can't think of another reel that's been in production for so long. Legendary!!

I just got an SS1300 and it's an awesome reel! They have been made since 1987...30 years unchanged!

This is still my all time classic. I have two and I still keep reaching for them.

I still have a Chronarch 100SF that I used minimally that is essentially LNIB and also have the Metanium XT variant (with upgraded bearings and a Chronarch B handle) that has the cool purple/green spool that is LNIB. I also just picked up a NIB TD-Z Type R, Ito, and an excellent condition TD-X JDM Air Metal 105H.

There is something to be said in classic tackle...it lasts! Imagine if you took the price of the Chronarch 100A ($194.99 in 1999) and took the features, country of origin, and applied that to today and tried to calculate an MSRP. It would have to be over $350 for sure! And those reels sold like hot cakes!

If my dad were alive, he would be able to add to this discussion with some great options from Abu, Daiwa, and Shimano that are true classics.

I'm going to go ahead and add Scorpion 1000/1001xt to the list. I've been looking for NIB ones and can't find any for under $350 and those are extremely rare and all overseas. To think I sold all mine in 2014 for $200 or less ](*,) ](*,)

Not sure of the age of the Tournament reels, but Daiwa BG spin reels I think are 40 years old.

Shimano Bantam 100 Tournament.

Not sure if that predates the term classic?

Love mine, rose wood handles, two bearings and hand cut levelwind with hand inserted line element. Feels quiet comical in he hand in comparison to newer offerings. Would live to display it on a Bantam rod with that aluminium pistol gripped handle...

Casts like a dog and so it should as its about 35 years old

Daiwa BG's came out in 1981 and only this year have they been changed...

I still have Abu Cardinal C3 and C4x, Abu Suveran, Abu Eon reels, Shimano Scorpion Metanium Mg (JDM) not used anymore, my daily workhorse is the Steez. Rods: half a lineup of the 2004 MB Destroyer, Evergreen Tactics, Abu Classic Tournament. Still all going strong.

I consider the early generation 'made in Texas' Allstar Zell Rowland TWS topwater rods legendary. I don't see a better topwater rod ever being made. I'll be buried with mine.
> Rod -- He uses an All-Star TWS rod, which stands for Top Water Special. "It's a blank that no one else in the industry has," Rowland says. "I helped them design the mandrel (form) for the blank.
The TWS rod is a 6-foot 6-inch rod with an action that's "hard to explain. Three or four different actions are built into blank," from the "extremely light" tip to the stiff handle, he says. The rod's softer action takes the "dummy factor" away, he adds. By allowing more "give," it's not as apt to jerk a bait away from a fish on an early hookset.
His All Star TWS (Top water special) 6’6”rod is designed to throw slack to the bait. According to Rowland, “The only action a topwater bait has is what you give it.” The first 6 inches is extremely light action, then 8-10 inches light getting heavier until you get to the last 12 inches above the butt which is heavy. This rod action allows the fish to pull the bait before you take it away.

Avail made a shallow spool for that reel. It's out of stock everywhere but if you could nab one then it might not cast so 35 years old.
