can your alpahs do this? (zonda spool!)

Post by e_bassfisher » Mon Jan 07, 2013 12:14 pm

recently picked up a megabass zonda spool....and did something i have not been able to do previously; i threw a float and fly with a casting reel. not just a dinky short cast, i'm talkin' about throwin' it! in fact, i got more distance with it than i can with my 10' float and fly rod with spinning reel. rod used was a rattle viper, line was 7lb sunline fc sniper, fly leader ~2', fly wt 1/16oz.

a couple other findings:
-a sub 10' rod stinks for float and fly  i missed several bites because of the shorter rod.
-to get more extreme, i took off the swivel and bobber, then tied on just the fly. i could easily cast it what i would call a 'fishable' distance. this did require an educated thumb though.
-the spool seems to hold just 'enough' 7# line. i would not hesitate to take this to use as a drop-shot or shakey head rig, to fish a tournament with.
-when i threw more more 'normal' finesse bass fishing lures(i.e. shakey heads, drop shot, ect..), distance and control were crazy good.

to me, the alphas has always been among the most versatile lines of reels ever made...well that has just been taken to another level. if you want to turn your sol/alphas into a pixy, try this spool...cheaper than buying a pixy ;)

The Zonda finesse spool is great but I have to say that after extensive comparisons using 1/32 to 1/16 ounce microtubes on an UL trout rod last spring the Curado 51E with Avail Microcast shallow spool and VBS brake was as good distance wise but much easier to control. I did not get a chance to test the Pixy special finesse spool as extensively and with the same line as the other two mentionned, but in preliminary tests the Pixy special finesse was also easier to handle for me than the Zonda finesse spool. Not the same application, rod or operator as described here but still a data point to consider.

interesting! i found the zonda spool to have better control and finesse capable than my microcast spool (cq50). i have also found it to be a bit more finesse capable than the rcs pixy finesse spool...the rcs spool does seem less finicky than the zonda spool though. really like both a lot though.

baitcasting reel + fly = big bass. That is fishing out of the box. Love it.
