rattle trap reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

What size rattle trap? And what rod are you using?

I had a old green curado in 3.8 to 1 that I used to murder bass on. Never understood why it worked so well, but it did. I would love to see a aldebaran size model in this ratio.

I like the 6.3:1, but I would rather have a lower gear than a higher one.

1/4 oz. Rattle Trap with my Calcutta DC100 is my favorite.

I use a KastKing Royale for rattle traps and crankbaits. I am waiting for them to come out with another lower speed reel for that application. They had a White Max, I think it was, but it's been discontinued. I would rather have a 5.X:1 for lipless cranks, but the 6.3:1 works well, too. I just slow down my retrieve a bit and get the same results.

I prefer faster reels. I rip a lot of lipless baits so the fast reel helps me pick up the slack line in a hurry.

I use 8.1:1 T3 SV because I like burning 1/2 oz lipless baits over shallow grass. It’s also a good gearing for rippin them off the bottom in deeper water. Same ratio and techniques I use for swim jigs. I switch between the two depending on the conditions.

+1 for HS ratios for burning them across flats and shallow water.
