Hats

Post by dazzle » Wed Nov 19, 2003 12:41 pm

I have been fishing for a long time now, but have always been wearing a baseball cap type of hat. It looks the best, but it provides minimal
protection for neck, ear, ...
What do you guys wear and what are you solutions for that?
Just use a lot of sunblock?

I also wear a ball cap but have considered other styles. I just use a lot sunscreen but i wash my hands right after with a non scented soap and also put fish scent on my hands after that.

If you want good protection. Wear the Vietnamese Coned shape hat. That's for maximum protection. If you too embarassed to wear one, order a St.Croix Decal and put it on your hat and FISH with St.Croix!!!!.
hahaha

Here's what the hat looks like w/ Decal

ic, maybe you prefer the shakespear decal. :)

Anyhow, I wouldn't mind to fish in those cone shaped hats, as long as I feel comfortable I can fish happy. I don't care what anyone says or thinks, it keeps me cool in the spring and summer months. I don't have to be distratced by the heat instead i can focus total my attention on feeling the bite.

I typically use a flats hat. The style of hats the flyfishers use while fishing the tropical flats for bonefish. They have a shield that covers the ears and neck as well as a great bill for shading the polarized glasses. Columbia makes a few killer ones, my advice would be to find one that does not have a hole in the back where the adjustment is.
Then plaster on the sunscreen. I use Smell Repel by Smelly Jelly after I use sunscreen or eat lunch. I kills every scent I have come across with just a small application.

Cheer,

In the summer when the sun is real intense. i wear a Shady Brady Raffia straw hat. It has a pretty wide brim and a vented crown to help keep your head cool.Rafiis straw is very tough. I have had mine for over 3 years now and it is as good as new.I shaped mine so that the brim is a lot flatter than this picture, to get more sun protaction. They even come with a stampede chin cord to keep it on in the wind. But if you get the correct size it will take a serious wind to blow it off.
And Remeber that about half the sun you get on the beach and on the water come from reflecting off the sand and water. So pour on the sunscreen.

I always use the baseball cap. When the sun gets behind me I just turn it around. Problem is, I forget to turn it back when the sun is in front of me and I end up with a burn mark in the middle of my forehead.
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.

Filson http://www.filson.com have a decent range of hats including fishing caps with neck flaps. Good quality stuff, too.
