Post by JerryC » Wed Dec 03, 2014 10:59 pm

I'd say it's an American Shad. They're definitely a different fish than the gizzard and threadfins I'm used to.

Hard to tell from your photo's. How long was it? How wide was it? Alewife's are usually a little skinnier.

It wasn't fat, just long and skinny.. Maybe 3" or so..

Pretty sure it’s an alewife. It could also be a blueback herring, but I don’t see much of a blue tint on its back, although their colors can vary.

The tint on the back was more brown and a little greenish.

It is an Alewife based on size, coloration, jaw structure, and location of catch. Now you know you can match the forage species.
