One other thing that hasn't been mentioned is time of day. Where I fish in Canada you have a good chance of catching in the morning up until 9:00 or 10:00 am and then again in the evening for the two hours leading up until sunset. During the middle of the day it seems like we have to work really hard to get a bite.

Lots of good advice above. Downrigger fishing is by far the most productive method for us as you can cover a lot of water and keep your bait in the zone.

Are you talking about fishing lakes for trout?

I've had good luck using a carolina rig and soaking powerbait or powerworms.

If casting lures, kastmasters, superdupers and roostertails do well.

I have never fished Lakers in open water but it seems like you either use a vertical jigging method paired with your electronics or you run down riggers. Through the ice is an absolute blast!!!
