I need a new crankbait reel and rod

Post by Abuman1 » Sun Nov 06, 2011 5:15 pm

Hey, I need a new crankbait reel and rod. I'm thinking about getting a revo winch and a medium action duckett micro magic, does it sound good? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I am a huge fan of the G Loomis CBR 845 for just about any crankbaiting, other than "deep" CBs. Love it for topwater as well. There are a lot of good reel options, depending on your budget, gear ratio preferences, etc. I currently have some TD-Zs and a Calais 100 on mine. The Calcutta 100Dc may venture to one of those rods in the spring as well, as it is currently on another rod for deep cranking.

There are a lot of good ones out there...Gear ratio and budget are probably the 2 biggest factors...(other than pure brand preference). If you like abu reels, the winch is fine. I deep cranked with one for a long time. My CB rods right now have a Calais 100, couple of TD-Zs, a Calcutta 100DC...IMO, choosing a CB reel opens up a ton of option because you should not be as weight sensitive, with the rod pointing down/sideways. Where I dont like a heavier reel for bottom baits, a Calais or a Zillion or another quality "heavier" reel can come into play..

I would go with a Zillion crazy cranker paired with a Dobyns crankbait rod. Perfect combo. What types of cranks are you planning to throw?

I love my loomis cbr903 and chronarch 101b. Deep, lipless, shallow, works for all with the 6.2:1 gears. That reel is a battle ship, never gives you a problem, cast smooth.

What types of cranks will you be throwing, primarily.

I have a Dobyns 705 Glass and like it a lot. It is a 7 footer, medium heavy. It's a great 3/8-5/8 oz cranking stick. It can handle larger cranks I'm sure, but I don't use them all that much. It is a little tougher to throw the small cranks like, say... DT6s... but it can be done.

probably not as fancy as most mentioned so far, I ordered a 7'4'' mh kvd rod for deep crankin, being it's january and living in nj although the waters still in liquid form its damn cold. I put a smoke 150 on it and through it in the yard. with a 1/2 oz bait the bait went a good 65-75 yds. i don't know how that compares to others, but seems pretty good to me and at 150 bucks it doesn't break the bank

I have a Lews Tournament Speed Spool and a shimano compre medium moderate fast rod and I love it for cranking. The lews is really nice and I would definitely recommend them. The rod loads up nice and chunks lighter cranks a good distance very easily.

I use a Shimano Curado 201 DPV 5.0:1 reel paired with a G.Loomis GL2 CBR843. I mainly throw DT-4's and 1/2 oz Traps.
I like TD-Z's
