Favorite Gear ratio for Walking the Dog

Post by sportyguy66 » Thu May 05, 2011 9:57 am

I've always used a spinning rod for fishing spooks but am working on having a Casting rod set up made.
What gear ratio do you guys prefer?

I like using my 6.2:1 Serrano....its right in the middle...not too slow (5.0:1) and not too fast (7.3:1)...it just works well for me...with every twitch of the rod tip this gear ratio allows me to control the slack line to my liking without trying to burn it in on the Chronarch d5 or slowing down before reeling too much slack in on the 7.3 Zillion..im sure its different for everyone...its mostly personal preference

You want something in the 6's. 5's are too slow and you won't pick up enough slack on longer retrieves, and the burner 7's are way too fast. You're pretty much gonna be dragging the bait along the surface. The 6's allow you to get a pretty cadence going. However, if you practice enough with any gear ratio, you'll be able to eventually teach your muscles how much to crank the handle.

Anything in the 6 range is just more efficient in my humble opinion. Hope this helps man

Perfectly put, and since you are starting out with a new casting reel I would suggest a 7:1 ratio. It's a lot less work with the same results.

I've been using a Sol so 5.8:1, works great for me.

I don't see how gear ratio matters in this instance.

The side-to-side rod movement is what creates the walking action. The reel is there to simply pick up the slack that's created from the rod twitch. If you're pulling the bait from your reel retrieve, you're (technically) doing it wrong.

Its all personal pref., u cant go wrong with either. I have mostly high speed reels and few low ratio, most of my fishing is with the high speed so its convienent for me to go that way.... I have tried both my high speed 7.1:1 and my 5.3:1 and I liked the high speed for a quick line pick up.... IMHO

X2. I have all the curado reels. However for walking the dog, I use either the E7 or the Zillion.
