MAN PRESUMED DEAD IN MONTEREY BAY AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES
A 28-year-old man is presumed dead and two men were hospitalized after their boat capsized this morning in the Monterey Bay about half a mile from Moss Landing Harbor, according to U.S Coast Guard Petty Officer Gabriel Flesher.
The North County Fire District received a call at 6:20 a.m. from someone who was standing on a jetty and heard the three men screaming for help, Capt. Doug McCoun said.
McCoun said he does not know what caused the 16-foot motorboat to tip over about a half mile from the harbor but did say the boat is more commonly used in lakes and calmer waters.
"The seas were actually calm. There was no wind. It happened just outside the surf, so I don't know, unless a rogue wave caught them, " McCoun said.
Authorities stopped searching for the missing man around 11:30 a.m. and plan to resume the search at 1 p.m.
The men were possibly on a fishing trip, investigators said
