Which part of the Northeast are you referring to?

In early June, most of the smallies will be on beds and you can sight fish for them if that's your preference.

For me, June in Jersey is post spawn time, I go to my magic bait, the senko. I know folks here fish Senkos year round but it's too slow for me.

For post spawner, I will go senko's in 031 and fish 4 inch grubs on 1/8 oz Gopher mushroom heads and tubes if it works on your water.

As for one bait... in June, northeast, I would have to agree with the post above and go with a Grub in white or pearl. Unless that lake you camp at is infested with crawfish, I would go with a tube.

Heyguys,

Here is my short list for Smallies, anywhere I go. These are not in any order and are used, depending on the prevailing conditions I face, when I get on a lake. Regular F9 Rapala, Tiny Torpedo, Rebel Deep Wee R, 1/8 oz hair jigs and ANY 3 to 4 inch long, suspending jerk baits. Of course, I love plastics too but there are way too many of those to try and pick one from that massive pack here. The above baits along with an 1/8 oz white skirted, gold bladed, single spin, spinner bait, have accounted for over 75% of the Small Mouth Bass I've hooked in the last two decades. Keep your lures on the smaller side as a few of the boys here have mentioned too. My totally Hottest Smallie lure ever? For over twenty five years it has been without a doubt, nothing more than my own little plain and simple, hand-tied, Haircraw jig. 8)

Have a good one boys,

For the crankbaits try the new DT lures from rapala. Depends on water color but i like the shad and crawfish colors.

Fishing 72,
What size of the DT series do u use? I saw they came out with DT6

Depends on water clartiy and deep of the fish
DT6 goes 6 feet
DT10 10 feet
DT16 16 feet

I use the DT10 alot becasue i fish clear lakes and the smallmouth can see it from far away as 20 to 30 feet sometimes.
