Braid/Fluro Leader Question
Thinking about using braid with a fluro leader for 1/2-3/4oz football jigs. On this set up I will mainly be fishing rock, ledges, and some bluffs, typically dragging the jig and make long casts. I think this set up will help with the stretch of the long casts and better feeling of contact with the bottom. Looking for input on this line of reasoning and line size options as far as the braid.

Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I'd be comfortable with 30lb braid on caster or 20lb on spinner. Let bottom contour dictate leader.
But, there is no scenario where I would ever think of throwing a Football Jig into rock. I struggle to figure a more certain snag actually. Unless you're talking like pea gravel or something I guess maybe. Good luck.

Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I use straight fluoro on my fb jigs. Usually, I'll run 17lb AbrazX straight, but 15 or 20 will work too, depending on how well they're eating it. This is for jigs up to 1oz. Personally, I'm not a fan of braid to fluoro on baitcasters, since I've had bad experiences breaking knots (Partly user error, since it was reasonably short line) but if I were to, I'd run 30 or 40lb braid, like Good Year said.

Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I've used 30# braid to a 17lb BPS Excel mono leader, connected with an Albright knot, for years on my topwater setup, and I've never had a knot break. I'm sure that part of it is the bigger mono, but it has worked for me.Fishinfanatic115 wrote:I use straight fluoro on my fb jigs. Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I have not tried the braid on the FB jigs yet. I'll post when I do.

Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I'm also sure I'm doing something wrong on it. I have a tendency to be a bit too gung-ho on my hook sets, so that's probably not helping my cause.mark poulson wrote:I've used 30# braid to a 17lb BPS Excel mono leader, connected with an Albright knot, for years on my topwater setup, and I've never had a knot break. Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I would try anything between 30-40 pound braid with a 15-20 pound fluoro leader connected using an alberto or FG knot. I personally use the alberto/improved albright knot and never had any break offs at the connection knot, but the FG knot comes out thinner to help come through the guides a bit better. I still use the alberto knot since it hasn't failed me yet and I can tie it faster out on the water compared to an FG knot.

Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I say just use one or the other. Straight braid (like 40-50#) should be fine for football jigs. Keep it simple.
This is the way.
Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I use 30lb smackdown and 14lb sun line floro, never had a problem with break offs. I rarely run straight braid, My leaders are about 3 ft or less.
Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
I fish similar structure and run 30lb braid to 14-16lb fluoro using an albright knot. My leaders are usually 12+ feet and I feel that the length keeps the braid out of the rocks better. I have no issues with the knot being inside the reel or with breakoffs.
Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
When fishing around structure i love to use a 30lb Smackdown braid to a Toray Bawo Exthread 16# leader. I have never had this combo break on me one time.
Re: Braid/Fluro Leader Question
Why mess with tying a leader when you could just go strait 25Lb Flouro. That is what I would do.
