Worm hook

Post by Scattergun2570 » Mon Apr 24, 2017 5:08 pm

I am interested in throwing the Berkley 7" Power Worm this season..but I have never used a round bend hook,,only EWG,,& G -Locks...I am being told that an offset Round Bend style is better...so do you think it is better than the two I mentioned? And what size should I be using with the 7" Power Worm?

I'd just buy a pack and try for yourself. I don't really like the offset round bend, but I do use the offset sproat bend quite a bit. In general, these traditional offset hooks, both round and sproat, have a bit more length between the offset and the point relative to the two hooks you mentioned, and since worms are slim bodied, you really don't need the extra gape of an EWG style hook.

There are quite a few pro and/or YouTube celebrity bass anglers who don't like to use EWG hooks for plastic worms. They claim that their hook-up ratio is poorer. I think, just generally speaking, that I agree but it depends on a lot of circumstances.

I am not certain what G-lock means but I would say that something you might try would be a VMC Drop Dead hook in a 5/0 for that size worm, then replace the stock screw on device with an Owner medium sized CPS (centering pin). Since the VMCs are weighted, I'd go with the lightest weight and it'll give you some options on how to fish it.

The VMC has an extremely long shank and when you nose screw the bait on, these two factors really decrease the compression that it takes for a bass to bite down and expose the hook. Your hook up ratio should go way up.

So, you screw on your worm to the CPS, then T-Rig it from there. It is very close to weedless for me, that and it won't hang up on rocks like a T-Rig will with a nose bullet weight.

Whatever worm you use? Be sure it has a rather broad nose for the CPS if you give this a go!

2/0 o'shaughnessy for a 7" power worm. Definitely no need for a wide gap.

I'd get a pack of 3/0 Owner twistlock lights.
This is the way.

My standard worm hook is the Owner offset shank worm hooks, 2/0 for 7.5" and 3/0 for 10" worms. I bought a pack of 3/0 Zoneloc hooks to try and I have caught 7 bass on 9 hookups. I haven't fished with them enough yet to really form a good opinion, but the Owners have been a staple of mine for a long time and I've never been disappointed.
