Casting rod for long casts light weights?

Post by big tom » Mon Mar 27, 2017 9:07 am

I fish Smallies on Lake Superior and Green Bay...These are big strong prespawn fish in crystal clear shallow water. They are holding on lots of wood and buckweed... susceptible to long casts with unweighted 4" finesse worms and light 3-3.5" swimbaits. I can hook them with a 7 1/2' spin rod but have little control on these bass up to 6 lbs... I'd like to try a long casting rod... Anyone have an opinion? I am considering an ALX Zolo 7'5" MFast SpeedFury, but havent found many longer MedFast or MedXFast sticks. PS...One cannot get a boat close to these fish...they can see it 60-70 feet away and are gone...

If you're not opposed to looking overseas.......

There are some over 7 series with the ratings and tapers you need. Some are 2 piece models. The other option is to have a rod custom built. Lots of rod blanks available in different price ranges for what you're after. ALX / Hydra also does custom orders. You could use one of their spinning blanks built into a casting rod.

Could not agree more. Best casting and most sensitive rod you could ever wish for.

I'll tag on to this with a question of what reel to pair up with the rod?

Salmon rods...8.5' to 9.5' typical.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish

The rod is important when casting light weights, but the reel you use is even more important. A finesse baitcaster will be your best friend in the situation you are describing. I have a Pixy with all the Zilla upgrades, and I can easily cast an unweighted 4" senko 90-100 ft, and likely further if I backed down on the cast control a bit. And the rod is a 6'7" ML Majorcraft Go Emotion. Also, try a braid-to-leader setup on your spinning reel. That would give you a better chance of landing those big brown missiles, because you could snug that drag down more than with straight flouro or mono.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

A casting rod using the same strength leader isn't going to give you any more power. Hard to belive a St Croix 7 or 7'6" Medium power SCV spinning rod wouldn't get the job done for you. Some of the legend inshore rods might help you with a bit more length, if that's important. The idea that you have more power in a casting rod designed to cast the same baits is just wrong in my experience.

I'm not sure what rod you have been using, but I picked up a 8'6 ML St Croix LTB spinning rod in the fall. This rod is a rocket launcher for marabou hair jigs and small keitechs. St Croix also makes a medium powered rod that is 8'6 if you are worried about controlling fish. I routinely fish around Ephraim, so I know what you are talking about.
