Analyzing Bathymetry For Bass Fishing!
Analyzing Bathymetry For Bass Fishing!
If you have never been on a lake before and all you had to go by was a bathymetric map, how would you analyze it for bass fishing?

Areas 23, 20, 22, and 28 are all the types of places that we would fish in California during the winter and summer. The nearest flats and transition routes next to these places are probably good in the spring and fall. I bet the flats are covered with vegetation in your area. They would be hard to stay away from if you like to flip.

Hey Todd!
I appreciate hearing from you.
Before I posted this thread I did a search on this forum for the terms bathymetry and bathymetric. Would you believe, that with nearly 13,000 fishermen on here as members, and going back nearly 12 years to 2003 when this site was created- that when I did a forum search for these terms and this subject that I did not get one single hit on it?
I find it hard to believe that this subject has not been discussed before!

I have never seen or heard the term bathymetry before. We always just call these depth charts or contour maps.
Similar to what you guys said, I would look for days near a full or new moon with wind from the south west then probably start at the 22 hole at the north end and work my way around the shore line heading east. That bay you mentioned and the one due north look best to me depending on cover and structure.

I would like to see technology catch up in this area. One day I would like to see this mapping information projected onto the back of my polarized sunglasses as I look down into the water, it would be cool if some sort of GPS type of thing could tell what I am looking at and overlay the bottom contour, bottom structure and fish on top of what I see in front of me through the glasses. Out military fighter jet pilots get this kind of technology! I want it too!

Yeah, the bathymetry had me thinking about one of those "bathyspheres" they used to plumb the depths of the ocean near the Marianas Trench or something like that. We call them contour maps here. Basically look for the fish with access to deep water near ledges. Fish can move up or down in the water column with less effort than if they need to move a couple, three hundred yards to do so.
