Frog line
This is the first time I've purchased a dedicated frog rod and reel. I see all over the place people saying you want 55lb-65lb braid for fishing frogs. Is this really that necessary. 50-65lb is what I use for halibut in 300ft of water bouncing 48ounce weights lol. Is 40lb good enough since most have actual breaking strengths in the 50 range? What are the benefits of going up to 55 or 65 from 40? I plan on throwing Koppers Live Target Hollow Bodies and Dahlberg divers in the 1/2oz to 3/4oz range. Thanks.
Re: Frog line
50lb is based upon the density of the weeds and higher flotation, along with being able to withstand heavy, jarring hooksets. Plus, the larger diameter tends to dig in less on the reel after muscling a biggun' outta the nasty stuff.
I suppose you could use 40lb if you are comfortable, but most 50lb braid is only slightly thicker. Also, keep in mind not all braids of the same test rating will be of the same diameter...if you choose a braid like Samurai, I would rec in the 60lb + rating.

Re: Frog line
I love my 65lb sonic braid. It does not dig in, and gets the job done with minimal problems. I to was thinking of lower lb test, but the killer hook sets and dragging huge bass out of the heaviest cover i now am happy i just bit the bullet. Draging the line threw the junk wears it down over time and i crank my drag all the way down when using a hollow frog.

Re: Frog line
Im using 65lbs PP and im going in to the nasty stuff. (LOL) Im throwing my frog in to the sticks. I guess it depends on how thick the cover is going to be is gonna determine your line diameter. I haven't had a problem yet with horsing the fish out of whatever. Just ski them in LOL. Oh yeah i just remembered this one time i was throwing a rat into open water with 50lbs PP and the fish slammed it and then the line broke. Not sure if it was an operator error........ but i set the hook like a MAD MAN. So no 50lbs for this guy, just my 2 cents.

Re: Frog line
I use 55lb Daiwa Samurai braid 90% of the time. If I'm fishing mats so thick it looks like you could park a truck on them like those that form on Guntersville, sometimes I'll jump to 70lb Samurai braid. I've been very happy with the DSB.
Re: Frog line
I am also using 55lb. Samuari and it works great. I get plenty of distance with it and very little dig ins. I am using it around and in Japanese Hyacinth(spelling) and I can winch em out no Prob. Good luck and tight lines
Re: Frog line
I use 40lbs Power Pro and do not have any issues with it. The only advantage I see of going up to 50lbs or higher is to avoid keeping your line digging in on itself.
Re: Frog line
50lb FX2 with no issues.

Re: Frog line
i use 50 or 60lb FX2 for the past 2 years and it's solid.
Re: Frog line
I use 50lb Samurai braid for flipping and pitching however for the frog I go with 55lb Power Pro. It seems stiffer and cuts through the weeds better IMO

Re: Frog line
my primary fishery for frogging is the california delta. i can get away with 55 lb samurai around "open" water but won't go less than 65 lb power pro or 70 lb samurai in the heavy stuff.
soooooooo ..... it depends on where you are fishing. there is no "one" right choice.

Re: Frog line
From my past, if you use anything from 40lbs or less it may potentially cut grooves in the guides from abrupt hook set and tugging of the weeds over time...
Re: Frog line
I use 30# Yo-Zuri Hybrid for my frog fishing which I do a lot of. I fish in heavy cover of grass, pads, & bulrushes with stumps mixed in & have not had problems. My frog rods are rated for 15 to 30 lb line. The line is a copolymer which has some forgiveness on hook set. I cross their eyes on hook sets & have not broke off in several years.
Re: Frog line
I use Sufix 832 in 65# and really appreciate the finer quality braid that it is. I've found that a frog reel also benefits from a TIGHT reel spooling with whatever braid line you choose so it can't dig in when you cross the fishes eyes on the set. If you don't know how to do this yourself then have a pro-shop line retailer do it for you! It makes a terrific difference.
