Best Dirty Water Chatterbait Trailer

Post by Liam7799 » Sun May 19, 2013 12:55 pm

I have little experience with a chatterbait but want to learn how to use it.

The lake I fish has heavily stained water with lots of algae by early/mid summer. Maybe 4 inches visibility.

What trailer would you all use to help the fish find the Chatterbait in dirty water.

Thanks

i often fish a chatterbait at a lake similar to yours, especially in the spring. I can't seem to keep them off of a 1/4 oz. black/blue chatterbait during pre spawn and certain times during the summer. I usually throw a black senko on the back as a trailer. I might cut off and inch or two to get it to the right length but that is my preferred trailer. hope this helps :D

IMO, I'd go to a large bulky trailer like a Zoom brush hog, 6" lizard or boot tail swimbait like a IR Skinny Dipper or Lake Fork LIve Magic Shad.

The trailer should bulk up the bait allowing the fish locate it easier. Make sure to make multiple casts in the muddy water to the same target. Rule of thumb is to stick to dark colors in dirty water. 11kalnmitc nailed it with Blk/Blue. That's personally where I would start.

Last season I ran out of the split tail trailers that came with my chatterbait(don't really like them much anyway!) and was looking for something else to try. I happened to have a pack of Pearl Charlie Brewer 3" bass grubs in my bag. Dipped the tail in Chartreuse JJ's Magic and had real good luck with it all summer. I'm not even gonna use the supplied trailers anymore. This was in pretty dingy water on Lake Champlain.
I also saw a video of a guy using a Zoom swimmin super fluke, haven't tried it myself.

Flukes work good but for me a paddle tail type swimbait is killer. I personally like the netbait version.

We fish a lot of chatterbaits down here all year. My favorite trailer is a Cane Thumper in Green Pumpkin or White. Cheap and pretty durable and I love the action and profile it gives. It makes the chatterbait wobble a little and also gives it a hunting action, especially the Revenge type chatterbaits with the wire. Flukes work good to but the paddle tail gets the big bites.

For me it's a kietech swinging impact or a lake fork hyper freak if I really need to displace some water.

well.. Today I banged out 3 LMB and and nice SMB on a chatterbait with a Keitech 4" EZshiner, worked out great. The boot tail isn't very durable.

I was fishing the St John river on Friday using a Black/Blue Chatter bait with a black 5" Grass Hog. I started with a Chartreuse Chatter bait with the black 5" Grass Hog. They loved that but I lost the Chartreuse Chatter and had to use the black/blue. I caught bigger fish with the black/blue but the Chartreuse got a lot more interest.

Baby bush hog if I need a fast/medium retrieve, but on the days thay want it slooow...stick on a baby ribbit! lots of bulk to let you slow the retrieve and the paddling feet just add more vibration to the bait. \:D/
