Small lure, BIG fish

Post by bitesize » Mon Aug 25, 2003 11:08 am

Ok, this was a scary experience I had this weekend.
I was fishing for bluegills and other sunfish using
light tackle in clear water. ultralight tackle and 2# test line.
Tossing a tiny swimming grub in chartruese color.
Caught some bluegills and then later I see this big
fish dart out and grabbed my grub and ran.
My little rod bent to a point where it shouldn't be
and I thought it would break. GOod thing it didn't.
Anyways, I fought it for a while and managed
to tired it out enough to get it close to the pontoon.
I was about to lip the fish and it had one more fight
in it and came off. The fish was about 3#, but
felt like a monster on ultralight tackle.
I guess the theory of larger lures for larger fish
doesn't always hold true.

Anyone have a similar experience where
you caught a big fish on a tiny lure?

RIDE'M COWBOY!!! Man, that's like riding a wild bull, bitesize. I have a little 5' UL rod w/ Quantum UL reel I like to use for crappie in the Spring. I had a 5 lb. bass hit my lil crappie jig once and it felt like I had a mack truck on. Bass can get really finicky and hit a small lure after passing up a big one. Don't know why. I've heard of people deliberately big game fishing with ultralight tackle. It's a real challenge trying to boat a good size fish without breaking the line or even the rod. Me? I'll stick to using bass rods for bass fishing! I just can't stand the heartbreak of losing one.

Well yeah, i prefer to use my bass gear for bass,
but I guess since I was fishing for bluegills I didn't
expect to hook up on a largemouth! it was fun!
Too bad I didn't land it.

This month's issue on the Bassmaster mag
had a 4lb test challenge. They are talking
about using light tackle for bass fishing.
They claim it catches way more fish.
Bigger lures don't mean bigger fish.
Bigger lures won't catch smaller fish, that's
why you only catch big fish on big lures.
But, 4lb test is kind of scary. Many bass
people set the hook so hard, I guess
that would have to change now with light
tackle. But what can you throw with 4lb test
aside from small jigs and plastics?
Trout lures for bass?

i use ultra-light tackle quite a bit and have caught bass up to 4 lbs on 4 ib test....one partiular lure i have had success with is the yozuri snap bean in the larger of the 2 sizes, of course most of this is done in early spring before weed growth is a problem....also have had luck with the 2 inch and 2 3/4 inch floating rapalas...when fished in fairly open water there is not much of a problem having fish break off, i use these lures mostly in clear water that recieve heavy traffic.

Yeah, I gotta agree. Can't use light tackle around cover.
Would hate to get snagged and snapping the line
and losing my lure.

The yozuri snap bean, are the actions just like
any crankbait?

yes...the snap bean has the action of your basic crankbait but the difference is it sinks not floats at rest...it is really great bait for large bluegills also...they come 2 to a package with 1 16th ounce and 1 32nd ounce lures.

Oh, it sinks. I have not tried a sinking type of crankbait yet.
All mine are floating. I'll have to give it a try. thanks!

Man I love fishing with those baits. Thats bout all I have in my soft side is yo-zuri baits.
The thing that is really cool is for such a small bait they run extremly well coming through the water. There not running upside down or going from right to left.
This past spring we were fishing and the guy in the boat finally turned and said you can play with the fish when you get them into boat.haaaaaa.
By the time we got through he was looking hard at the light spinning tackle.I never use any line bigger than 8lb test.
Next week I'll be using light spinning tackle catching white bass using a 7 ft. light cabela's fish eaglell spinning rod.
BE STILL MY HEART!!

Any where from 1 pound to a hair over 2.Last october when we were up there we got into them feeding right before dark.I had never caught any type of bass like that.It was 4 of us in two boats and on more than one occasion we all had fish on at one time.
Just loaded up and hooked up the rv and bobcat. Will be spooling up the reels tonight.
Will be heading out in the morning about eight a.m.
It breaks my heart knowing ya'll gonna be working why I am out there messing with them ol stinking bass and crappie.HAAAAAAAAAA. \:D/

I was trout fishing in may, and i was using 4 pound magnathin line, and a mepps #0 which is the smallest one, it is like 1/16 of an ounce, maybe less, Then i thought i snagged something, till i saw my line go the other way, i caught a 3 1/2 pound bass, if any one here has a fenwick ultralight pole, 5' it feels like a marlin on the end. I love using Ultra light, because even when you catch a small one it feels like a big one.

Isn't it even more exciting when you're fishing ultralight for trout,
but you end up hooking something much larger and heavier and
you get the fight of your life! Love it, but that won't mean I'd be
switching over to ultralight fishing for bass. :D
