Hello all,
I've just started fishing for LMB for 6 months, everyday almost on early am in Los Angeles CA. I was wondering if you guys could help me understand more about the rod tip actions and what changes on hook sets etc...
I fish a city lake: MOstly Echo park Lake: Water is calm, water is dirty, and at the moment there is barely any weeds due to blue stoning .
I've been working with worms (roboworm) with wacky or nose hook with a nail at the other end.
Now that I said what I use...
On a low action rod, I bring the worm slowly with my rod. My hands are lightly holding the rod, and when the fish bite I sort of loosen my line, so the fish cannot feel any weight in the proccess. Then I reel the excess line and sligtly lift the rod to feel the weight or very loose weight of the fish and set the hook. I catch more of the fish this way for some reason
On a fast action rod, I did the same thing but I feel less bites on my rod. I also tend to loose more fish trying to hookset them. or just plain reel and lift the rod lightly.
I am not sure what I have to do on my hookset of a fast action rod. Do I just set the hook and not any loose line? Do I have to set the hook faster or slower? I am not sure what I am doing wrong...
Please help....
Thnx in advance
(sorry for my english, it is pretty bad eh? I think I need some engrish classes).

Re: Fishing rod Tip: fast action to low action
Most feel that fast action rods are superior to slow action rods for feel presentations. Fast action rods are typically quite rigid and allow for excellent vibration transfer and quick reaction times. And much better hooksets with the heavy hooks typically used.
Slow action rods excel with moving bait presentations where the fish basically hooks itself. The slower rod is a much better shock absorber between the angler and the fish keeping hooks lodged in the fish.
But...I've built slower actioned rods for feel presentations and faster actioned rods for moving baits. Because that's what the angler was most comfortable with.
Its hard to provide much advice on your specific situation without knowing the lure ratings for your rod. My guess is that you are feeling fewer bites on the fast action rod because it is over powered for your offerings. Your baits should fall right in the middle of the lure weight range printed on the rod. Those are the weights the rod was designed for.
With feel presentations and fast rods, I set the hook as soon as I feel the fish. Line should be tight already so no need to reel up. Generate as much tip speed as possible.
Bottom line...if it isn't broke, don't fix it...fish in what ever way is most comfortable for you even if it is different than the "norm".
