Largemouth vs Smallmouth bass

Post by bitesize » Mon May 05, 2003 3:12 pm

What's the difference in techniques, lures, etc when fishing for smallmouth? I have never caught any smallies, but have caught many largemouths before.
Just use the same stuff but downsize in lures?

That's pretty much it. I had the same questions but after fishing Pyramid lake in Southern Cali, it was pretty much the same. Dropshotting a 4" - 6" worm, I was catching both large and small mouth bass. Hell i've even heard of pro's using 1/2 oz jigs to get the bigger smallies. Try hair jigs also.

There are certain times of the year that these smallies get so aggressive that using plastics are a waste of time. Spinnerbaits, Crankbaits, jerkbaits or any reaction baits ripped as fast and erratic as possible will get these bad boy to hit. I think one company offers smallmouth spinnerbaits in full 1/2 oz sizes.

What lake are you fishing at?

In reply to maxilim...

I fish mainly in the James river (wading) here in Virginia and a white PowerGrub (2"-4") rarely ever fails me for smallmouth. The fish might not be lunkers but on a slow day, when it's blazing hot, I don't think I've ever left the river without catching one respectable size fish.

FLW red worms from Walmart or small cranbait has worked well for both types.

Try small rapala skitter pops, small jig/grub/or worm combo. I think that amino for bass helps too. When fish are aggresive try a 1/4 Terminator spinnerbait.
