Re: UL Topwater Fishing

I occasionally dig out an old Heddon Tiny Torpedo, and it seems like everything that swims wants to take a swipe at it. I’ll have to pick up the even smaller Teeny Torpedo to try when using BFS as well. And tiny poppers are always a blast.

Re: Beast Coast Tungsten Lil' Magnum Jig

I haven’t fished the Beast Coast tungsten jigs, but I find that, especially in warm water, faster falling jigs often outfish those with a slower fall. In jigs, fall rate is akin to the speed of retrieve in a moving bait — a factor you sometimes need to adjust that can trigger bites. The bulk of the ...

Re: leader for bass, walleye, pike

Should have mentioned that you may want to put a solid ring on the end of the steel leader you’re attaching to the line. 30# wire is really thin compared to even the thinnest wire hook you would normally tie to.

Re: Favorite type of topwater bait?

Definitely a popper for me. These last couple years have been lights out with a Lobina Rico and Rio Rico. The fry color is my favorite. The bass in my home lake love this color and it outproduces all the other colors I’ve used. My favorite *type* of topwater is a walk the dog style. My single favor...

Re: leader for bass, walleye, pike

A pike can slice just about anything that would make a reasonable leader for bass and walleye. They usually don’t, but they certainly can. If you’re targeting the bass and walleye, I’d stick with your usual line and leader and just accept that a pike might snip your leader. If you go to a heavier le...

Re: Should I switch to left handed retrieve for BFS?

Thank you for all the thoughtful responses. I will be using BFS primarily in moving water, at least to begin with. With conventional bass tackle, I’ve always pitched with my left hand (unless the angle is better using my right), and I’m almost equally proficient casting with either hand, and yes, I ...

Re: Got any tips for rigging pork frogs?

BTW, I didn’t mean to say you were wrong about the Uncle Josh pork—you have the product in your hand while I don’t—but since you’re new to pork, I thought it might not be where you expected to find it. I noticed in the comments on TW that people are saying it’s stiffer than the old stuff and are put...

Should I switch to left handed retrieve for BFS?

I’ll soon be buying my first BFS outfit. In my fishing life so far, I’ve always used right handed retrieve reels. I once briefly tried a left retrieve reel, but I didn’t like having to relearn active retrieves such as walking the dog and jerkbaits. I also like palming the reel on the retrieve, and I...

Re: Got any tips for rigging pork frogs?

In looking at pictures on Tackle Warehouse and even the drawings on the labels of the jar, it appears that Uncle Josh still cuts the small slit for the hook in their baits. It may be further forward than you think — it’s quite close to the front edge of the bait. As for the worm trick, it seems like...

Re: Got any tips for rigging pork frogs?

I don't know what brand of pork rind you have, but the three main brands back in the day all had small hook slots to poke the hook through precut, so there was never an issue in putting them on. That “cut” was slightly longer than the width of the hook plus the barb of a large hook, (and most hooks ...

Re: What is your primary line setup?

Various co-polymers on different outfits for different applications/situations, plus flourocarbon (with mono leader) for Carolina rigs. Like many, when I first tried fluorocarbon, I did it backward, using the FC as a leader. That was a bad idea. Stretch in the leader is vital. Nowadays, if I can de...

Re: Line on a spinning reel

I hope I didn't go too far with my post, but I have friends who have fished spinning tackle their entire lives who either don't realize or don't care about any of the things I mentioned. It would be sad if it weren't so annoying...

Re: Tokyo rig question...

It is a really good question, I think they primarily use it because it is a convinient line connection where the other ring does not interfere with the knot. Here is one if the originals, put whatever wieght you want on the shaft at any length, cut, crimp, cast. Relativly inexpensive, a bunch of ho...

The Keitech Custom Leech has become my go-to. I like the small Sexy Impact as well. I still have a few of the old Roboworm reapers as well, and they're great, so I may have to try the small Iovino reapers.
