i was at cabelas checkin out reels and noticed the Exceler does that too. i opened up 2 from the box nd sure enough, same noise. on TD-advantage and higher models, no noise. still though, for a $60-$100 reel i still expect smooth operation

i agree with islandbass regarding size. if you choose the daiwa offerings, it would be a 2500 or 3500 size reel. i'd go with the 2500 size. oil when needed. complete teardown twice a year. i fish 3 times a week for a total of 18hrs/wk. sometimes i'll do it when i notice that reel feels like it has resistance.
