Re: Versatile JDM UL for Trout - seeking guidance

I know the Rayz Spectra series is quite versatile. I fished one a bit when my buddy had one. Handled moving baits and jigs quite well.

Tip is soft and tapers nicely into the butt section. The butt gives in a progressive way.

Zander has been publishing video coverage of a whole mess of items. There is coverage on the TackleTour main page with all the links.

St Croix have their own reels now. Other than that, nothing popping out yet this year.

Re: Pitching performance & leader length

For really any leader, I run it so the leader knot is between the reel and the first guide. Usually does well for me casting and also for pitching, as the leader "should" be out of the guides if you are pitching at that leader length.

Re: CC BFS 23 vs 17?

I like the 23 better all around. More gear ratios, smooth, casting is improved, reel feel slightly more comfortable...price is less than the 17 as well (mostly due to the exchange rate).

Re: New Shimano high end baitcasting reel?

I haven't quite figured out sizes either. Is 70 and 700 the same, then 100 and 1000 the same? What size is the Aldebaran? I considered the Metanium also. But I wanted the lightest possible to prevent fatigue. I caught 4 bass this evening on the Alde using a small jig with trailer. It's such a stran...

Re: Fenwick is Back! A First Look at the Completely Refreshed Lineup from Eagle to World Class

so way back in 1997 my first high end rod was a Fenwick CoFi 57 rod, which was a made in the USA rod along with their Techna AV rods. It was $192 Canadian which at the time was a lot for a rod. Fenwick released these two rods as sort of their 'come back' models I believe that were made in the USA a...

Maybe there is a good reason, but I don't understand why they don't just sell the JDM models in the US.
Tiemco basically uses the Fenwick name to make rods for the Japanese market...at least I heard.

That would make for some distributor issues.

Re: Thicker/Heavier FC for BFS reel

There are those "in between" finesse reels such as the Aldebaran 30 and Alphas SV 800s (shallow spool). They give you a little more line capacity than a BFS reel.

Braid with a top shot as Cal stated is pretty common too.

That's why people throw huge trout swimbaits. Trout are more nutritious than other fish so, fish like to eat them

Re: Phenix Feather 7'1 L Casting

The rod will work for that. The taper/power is fairly light but, can still set the hook and bring fish in. The taper will cushion fighting in current quite well. How does it compare to the Phenix Classic BFS? I think Cal will be better suited to answer that. He has been deep diving into many Phenix...

Re: Carbon monocoque is a waste

It makes a difference in the casting motion. The reduced weight also means reduced inertia and momentum. In a way it is almost like comparing a similar build of full cork handles vs split grip handles. I will also say that feeling the vibration at the butt of the rod from a reel spool whirling like...

Re: BFS Rod Build

I felt a small difference when using spiral wraps on UL moderate blanks when cast super light lures. For bass BFS, won't be any measurable difference. The reduced amount of guides will help more than any perceived reduced casting performance
