You should be fine in a jon w/a 7'6"...I have a 12' jon too and it is no prob pitchin/flippin out of w/a 7'6"...I even chuck big swimbaits with an 8' rod and have landed a few 10lb+ bass out of it.

Gear ratio depends on what presentation/tacke you are going to be using. I think a good starting point is 6.3:1. 9.9oz isnt that bad. I agree with kbookert. The 5.0:1 would be too slow in my opinion. Why not look at the Quantum Tour Edtion TE1170PT with a 7.0:1 burner ratio? You can cover alot more water with a faster gear ratio.
