Re: How many rods/reels do you actually use

I usually have around 13 setups, all baitcasting. I fish a variety of species so, a few setups wont work for me. I got 5 BFS setups. Covers trout, panfish and bass: 1 for cranking 1 for the extremely small lures/fish 1 bass/panfish 1 "power" BFS for all-round use 1 for trout/panfish. The rest are ba...

Re: Building the Ultimate BFS Rod

CFX carbon grips are perfect for lightest builds. I use those butt grips as rear grip also. Here's my lightest rod atm. It's built with CFX grips and Rodcraft skeleton seat. Blank is modified Bushido CB68/6-12 cut donw to 6'- Rod weights 65g (2,3oz). Cast nicely 3-15g. https://i.imgur.com/ctHQTds.j...

Re: Building the Ultimate BFS Rod

I've gone so minimalist on my custom rods that my builder is upset that he doesn't get to show his talent. It seems like every rod that I had built that was made to match a reel didn't end up being a long match. My builds over the last three or four years have all been black with a touch of s...

Re: Building the Ultimate BFS Rod

I tend to go by this rule when I am building anything from a rod to making baits.........I have to fish it first......so I build the best I can using the best I can afford. Why build something inferior if you can help it? I have fished this exact blank in the past. I wish it was a little lighter in...

Re: Building the Ultimate BFS Rod

I think with carbon grips and guides that you should black the whole rod out. Use black, maybe gunmetal, thread wraps and checks and leave the blank as bare as possible. Unless you know for sure which reel you're gonna use, then maybe lightly sprinkle in a few matching highlights from whatever anod...

Building the Ultimate BFS Rod

So... I have a set of AGS guides from my Daiwa Silver Creek AGS. I broke the tip on the rod and now, the guides may be getting stripped for a custom build. I have an NFC 4'6 UL blank (IM in their Freshwater series). I already have all the components to build this rod (non-AGS guides, reel seat, grip...

Re: New techniques

I made each year a focus on a certain technique. Year of the Frog: Frogging seems simple enough. After a lot of trial and error, I was able to read areas better and determine if an area is not worth frogging. I became addicted to frogging and I would neglect any other type of fishing if I saw lilyp...

Re: dippin' my toes in the BFS world

If throwing topwater, try finding a low-stretch mono. Will be a good all around line for working topwater (mono floats) and also be able to work reaction baits and such too. Braid also works with topwater...quite well but, If you got a "stiff" rod with the no-stretch braid, you will loose a lot fish...

Re: dippin' my toes in the BFS world

Braid is more forgiving for casting. If using 1/8oz and above, I would use FC for it. It will give you enough give to not pull the smaller hooks from fish.

Re: Moderate Flipping Rod

Hobie, I think you've sold me on the idea of wrapping up one of those NFCs! Sounds like your struggles have been the same as mine over the years but you've been a bit more diligent about coming up with a solution  Also those Falcons and Kistlers look really sweet and would be right up my wheel...

Re: Conquest BFS spool swap to standard 100 size?

Wont work. Outside of spool dimensions, the braking systems are totally different.
