Basically a personal choice. I use oil as I like the see the knobs spin freely (and use Ardent oil). Others choose to use grease as it makes the reel appear to operate more smoothly. What kind of reel will you be using? I would personally go with a 683C, the extra power wouldn't hurt, especially for what you are throwing. I fish on the Cali Delta where there is a lot of vegetation at times, and use a DX744C with a Zillion 50th for spinner baits.

Would someone please list the main differences between the Alphas reels - 103 (purple one), F, Type R, R tuned, Ito ai, and whatever else I missed?
