Yes, I fine tune the balance on most of the rods I use. As above, I weight inside of the rod butt with "pencil" drop-shot weights. Pay attention to the rate of retrieve as some 1000 sized reels are much slower than a 2000 or higher sized reel.

I've only read of Pixies being used for very light weight baits, are there anglers that use the Pixy for heavier duty applications such as mid-depth crankbaits, spinnerbaits or jigs? Just wondering...

I put on the new 8 strand Fireline 20lb on an Abu Premier a month ago. It was very stiff for a day or two, but has been breaking in nicely throwing spinnerbaits.
