Worst part is that I took it out today to try it out for a few minutes when I noticed that not all the guides are correctly aligned... what a bummer.

As Bassmar mentioned, you really need to tighten the drag. When I hooked a 4.5lb bass, the drag was 80-90% locked down, and it still slipped a bit in the beginning.
Haven't used mono for this reel, but I've had no issues with football jigs 1/4oz - 3/8oz.
