I use a composite rod and I set pretty good. I do sweep to the side like most guys have suggested, after you set the hook keep your rod tip down and start reeling. I would try sweeping the rod to the side slowly. You dont want to rip back with cranks.

It's also possible the fish are short striking the bait and only getting a hook or two barely in them, easily thrown. Try varying the retrieve or bait to see if slowing it down gets better hookups.
