You can paint them with two part clear epoxy BEFORE you use them. It's pretty durable.

The IPT of the HG is 31 and that of the XG is 36. Personally I prefer the 31 IPT for the techniques you mention. I find it easier to speed up my retrieve with a slower reel then to slow down with a faster one. With an XG reel I find my spinner or chatter baits keep rising and blowing out the surface...

Take another look at the instructions that came with the reel. They advise you to apply a light layer of oil to the brake blocks and the race. Use a ear bud and apply a very light layer to the tips of the blocks and the race. The noise should disappear.
