Re: Best dropshot rod for 1/2-5/8 ounce weights in deep, clear water

I guess I was having a difficult time imagining any rod faster than the actual dropshot rods I use: an OG Cumara and a first gen USDM Orochi XX Stinger Shot. Both of these are “hinged” with a very short section of extremely light tip that transitions quickly to the backbone. But the actual transitio...

Re: Best dropshot rod for 1/2-5/8 ounce weights in deep, clear water

Thanks, @Drakestar, for your response. I was going to ask people who have experience with both rods whether the Loomis 822 DSR & SYR were actually different, since all the info on the website is the same (power rating, action, and lure weights), so I appreciate that. I posted this in another forum ...

Re: Good Tackle Thread (overlooked products)

I think this is overlooked, but Keitech makes a creature bait called a Krazy Flapper, it comes in a few sizes. It's very versatile, I use it for a jig trailer, pitching, wobble head, and on a free rig. It gets me bites around docks like no other lure as I typically struggle to catch them off docks,...

Re: Best dropshot rod for 1/2-5/8 ounce weights in deep, clear water

Thanks for your informative response. You've given me a lot to think about. So far, other than Bubba shotting in shallow weeds, I've never been able to convince myself to use casting tackle for dropshotting. I think I'll pretty much stick with spinning, but maybe I'll rig up one casting setup and gi...

Re: Cheaper 5" Big Hammer Alternatives

If you can get by with a 4.5” swimbait, the Lunker City Salt Shaker is $.75/bait.

Best dropshot rod for 1/2-5/8 ounce weights in deep, clear water

I'll be fishing the 1000 Islands area a few days this year, and much of the time will be dropshotting in 20-35’. For those who aren't familiar with the area, you can see bottom in 35’+, so it's exceptionally clear water. Because of current and other considerations, heavy drop shot weights are necess...

Re: Confidence and colors

The larger the flakes and the denser their distribution, the more I dislike them. In fact, I barely ever buy or fish any plastic with red flake. Or am I just really weird? Yup. You're just really weird. Around here red flake (pick your primary) is the only thing that never disappoints. I'm joking, ...

Re: Good Tackle Thread (overlooked products)

Pretty much everything in the Lunker City catalog is overlooked and underrated. Since the Super Fluke appeared, people stopped talking about the SlugGo, which was the first soft plastic jerkbait. They invented the best softbait keeper system for jigs, were almost the first to have a grub with a padd...

Confidence and colors

I think we all have colors in soft plastic baits that we have confidence in. If we didn't, we’d spend all of our money on every color variation of every bait we fish. Instead, most of us are constantly replacing a couple of colors per bait while any other colors we own only get used on unusual occas...

Re: Wanting more info on midnight knot

I don’t know what to say. It’s frustrating when you seem to be doing everything right but the knots don’t hold. Although I can tie an FG without it, I typically use this tool for speed and consistency. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiichi_Seiko_Knot_Assist_Tool_20/descpage-DSKA.html And make sure...

Re: Compact Spinnerbaits for smallies

Since the OP asked about compact spinnerbaits as opposed to finesse spinnerbaits, I’m going to go away from the lightweights and instead focus on a compact profile. The already oft-mentioned Spotsticker Mini-Me is a good one, as is the War Eagle Screaming Eagle. Honestly, the Nichols Pulsator series...

Re: Wanting more info on midnight knot

It’s the same thing as the PR knot. You must have a bobbin to tie it, preferably the kind that has adjustable tension and the rubber o-rings to grip your line. It's definitely a great knot for big game saltwater applications, and it *should* be ok in lighter tests as well. That said, if you need a t...

Re: Favorite type of topwater bait?

Cannot beat a lobina Rico or iovino splash it. Both get bit incredibly well and surprisingly can walk side to side well with a smaller walking motion. I use these as finesse walking baits when the fish boil on shad. Versatile bait since it can be used as a finesse popper or finesse walking bait I a...
