A red letter day on the chalk

I spent yesterday afternoon and early evening fishing the river Itchen in Hampshire, one of our classic English chalk streams. The weather was 13 celsius, intermittent rain and constant wind. My weapon of choice was my Orvis Super Fine Touch 7'6 #1, matched to a Battenkill 1 loaded with a Superfine ...

Re: 4# mono comparison

Reading this I feel like the only one that doesn't use mono......at the moment. For the last 14 years I've used nothing but braid, only recently with a flouro leader. Have I been missing out on something? Now off to spool up with the only non braid that I posess, Orvis Super Strong copolymer tippet ...

Re: A short session

Nice perch and quite an amazing looking little place. It is a beautiful place and I feel privileged to have fished it for the last 30 years. I do fish the pristine chalkstreams of Hampshire, but that little river is home. As for the perch, there are much bigger ones lurking, I've caught them to ove...

A short session

Had another session of a few hours the other afternoon on my favourite stretch of local water. Due to health issues I've only fished the water twice in the last four years, the first being a couple of weeks back. Weather was bright and warm with a slight breeze. Water was holding a bit of colour and...

Re: Tough bite, what do you do?

Most times I'll fall back on spinners, Mepps, Ondex etc. Normally I'll run them slow and deep. On small trout streams I go with Hildebrandt Fly Flicker Spoons, trout can't resist them.

A 6lb Consolation Prize

Went for a few hours on my home stream on Wednesday. I was targeting trout using my Hart Night Ranger / Stradic, which is described here: http://forums.tackletour.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=39707. I arrived late pm in bright sunlight and a light breeze. Water was holding some colour and still 7" up on...

Re: Favorite tackle boxes for hard baits?

I use a clutch of Plano 3213's. One each for cranks, spinners and soft plastics. Not yet found better ;) .

When you'd rather drive a rust bucket than have an inferior rod and reel.

Re: Daiwa Spinmatic Tuflite UL Rods

You guys are totally spoilt on that side of the big pond  . We have sooooo little to choose from over here. Also, that which is available is generally, to my mind, poor quality.......and Chinese  . At least South Korea tends to produce some good quality kit.

Re: Fly Tying

After 20 years of rolling my own I agree with the advice given above. As stated buy quality tools and buy them seperately. For a vise get the best you can afford. The Renzetti Traveller is a good bet, I have had one of these for years and use it as my streamside vise. For main use I run with an Abel...
