Re: 1st Spinning Reel
I just spooled my Symetre 1000 with 6# (1# diameter) braid. Did I go too light? It seemed to me that for perch, bluegill, etc the thinest diameter possible would be the best option (less visable).
This will be the first time I have tried braid for ultralight.

5" Yamamoto Senko in Watermelon/Red Flake (208), Junebug (213) or Smoke Pearl Blue (240), of course.

Re: Senko hook
For years I used 3/0 EWG Gammy hooks for 5" Senkos. Last year I tried the Owner Twist Lock Light hooks and they are all I use now. The Senkos last longer and they do not slip down the hook. One thing: I've found that I prefer 4/0 for 5" Senkos since the "twist lock" pushes the plastic farther down t...

Re: Pflueger Patriarch spinning???
The 9535 Patriarch is the EXACT size as a Daiwa 2500 size reel,in frame & spool diameter. The Shimano 2500 size is smaller than a Daiwa 2500 or Plfueger 9535. I think the 9535 is a great size for using 6-10 lb test. Remember, when using fluoro, you want to go a little bigger in spool diameter. I pi...

Re: Offset EWG Hooks; Texas or Texposed
I Texpose all the time. Not much brush or wood where I fish, but lots and lots of weeds and other vegetation. Hardly ever have a hangup.

I have two 5.3:1 Pro Qualifiers and absolutely love them. I will pick up a couple more in different gear ratios next time they are on sale for $80.

Re: Reeling Demographics... are you a righty or lefty
I am right-handed and use right-handed baitcasters, but last year I learned to cast with my left hand, too. It seems I now cast more with my left hand than my right.

Re: Baitcasting or spinning reel??
I use both spinning and baitcasting gear, depending on the situation.
But I have never been clear as to why spinning gear is so popular for smallmouth and walleye. Any explaination?

Re: Ultralight
I have used a Shimano Symetre 1000 for ultralight fishing for the last 5 years, and paired it with a 5 1/2' Gander Mountain Guide series ultralight rod 3 years ago. I have been very pleased with the results and the combo only costs about $130.

My favorite Senko color is purple with emerald flake (June Bug). No matter what colors I try this one always seems to be the most productive.

Re: Berkley Maxx?
I used 6 lb MAXX for two consecutive weekends with a Symetre spinning reel and had about a half dozen casts where the line twisted so badly I had to cut it off (first time I have ever had a birds nest with a spinning reel). I went back to 8 lb XL last weekend with the exact same setup and had no pro...
