Re: Fly Tying

Good advice so far. Fly tying kits are ok, but as DUZBASS mentioned I like to just pick out everything seperately. Get as good a vice as you can afford. With that said, I have been tying for about 17 years now and use a cheapo vise! It works ok but not nearly as good as the newer, higher end ones. N...

Re: threadfin shad & baby perch - my first attempts

Those look great, nice going! Those will catch fish for SURE. They look like EP fibers? EP fiber is a great material, but if tied too thickly will cause the fly to float, or barely sink at all. Often times I have to do a little trimming on the water to get it right. Also, sometimes longer EP flies f...

Re: Powell 6'8" Med Hvy EF 683C

I agree with Bass Pro regarding the Zillions. The Zillions are outstanding rods (I had one) but they are a bit more powerful than the ratings suggest, especially compared to most other makes. The Max rods remain unchanged in their construction, so that is not to blame. If you truly aren't satisfied ...

Re: Jerkbait/Topwater Rod - Compre

Not the exact rod, but I have the Crucial 7'M crankbait rod rated for 8-14lb line. Excellent rod. Light, balanced, and extremely sensitive. I like it for cranks, jerks, and topwaters up to 1/2oz. I would step up to the MH if you want to toss heavier baits. It has quite a soft action, however I would...

Re: Top Water Rod?

What about St. Croix Mojo Bass Casting rod MBC68MXF 6' 8" M? It's listed for only $100. Same price as the BPS when it's on sale. Same rod characteristics too. Or is the SignatureSeriesII much better? Having never seen that rod in person, judging by the specs (and the fact its a topwater special rod...

Re: Top Water Rod?

My 2 cents: Poppers/walking baits: 7' rod for 8-14 or 8-17lb line and a medium fast action Frogs: 7'3"-7'6" rod for approx 15-25 or 15-30lb line, fast action (you dont want a broom stick with no "tip" to it). Use braided line. Buzzbaits: 7'-7'3" rod for 8-17 or 10-17lb line and a fast action. One ro...

Re: looking to get into fly fishing

Daniel, Cabela's is a great source for getting an entire combo together. Just about all of their rods are very competent casters....the L-Tech and LSi rods will actually give the big names a run for their money both in terms of performance and craftsmanship, not to mention they carry a fine warranty...

That looks real nice! The old Chronarch 100SF was one of the nicest reels I ever owned....wish I had kept it. Solid as a rock and a great performer.

Re: Rod for Smallmouth

Matt has a good rod suggestion....a 6 to 7 weight is about right for a lot of Smallmouth fishing. A 2/0 nymph is abnormally huge and something I have never seen before. There are some large stonefly nymph patterns but I have never seen any in an "ought" size. Large nymphs will certainly catch Smallm...
