Assuming you were talking about the handle side plate. If it's the palming side plate then just pull the pin at the top of the frame to the right(if its a right hand reel) it's spring loaded so it requires some finesse to hold the pin back and remove the plate.

Did you remember to remove the maintenance port lid and screw? The handle side plate won't come off unless the maintenance port/port screw is removed.
