Traps are actually low resistance baits. They don't require alot of torque from a reel to fish them. first things first, make sure you don't have a bit of line wrapped in the spool spindle, or shaft area. Give it a thorough cleaning. I once ended up with about 1cm of cut line between the pinion and a through spindle spool caused same type of issue your describing.
