Re: Ultralight rods with micro thin tips
I think you mean .05" instead of .005". The .005" is almost like a human hair. JDM rods at 7/10 of a millimeter are .027". Thus it is almost half the size of a .05" tip. There is not a blank available in the states that will approach the thinness of a JDM micro tip rod. As I stated before the only o...

Re: Ultralight rods with micro thin tips
Ultralight rods built on fly rod blanks have a pretty small tip diameter. I have a 2 piece 6' St. Croix Avid 3 weight built up as a ultralight, and the tip diameter just behind the finished tip top guide is .005". I built a spin/fly rod from the TFO 1 weight 4 piece fly rod blank, using the top 3 se...

Re: Daiwa RG2000H-AB Spinning Reel for Ultralight Fishing
If you manually close the bail (w/o cranking the handle), the advantages aren't as great. If you close the bail by cranking the handle, there are a couple of advantages. When the bail snaps closed, it can hit the line with enough force to throw an open loop on your spool, which after time will come ...

Thanks, Bryin. Bail-less will change your life! Just don't cut the bail off a modern reel!

The original Shakespeare 2200 (not 2200 II) is perfect, IMHO. 7 ounces, cleans up nice, sealed Japanese bearings, and easily replaced fiber drag washers. I repl...

Re: Any Reorts on Major Craft Nextino NTA-582 SUL
I have ordered a a Major Craft Nextino NTA-582 SUL that I plan to use for extreme ultralight spinning as described in Joe Robinson's book, Piscatorial Absurdities. This rod is supposed to handle lures in the .8-3 gram range and use 1-3 pound test line. I will use a Pfluger President 6720 with Strof...

Slip Floats (vastly improved, I think)
It seems that if you truly fish UL (4# or less?), then tinkering and equipment modification is probably par for the course. Slip floats in general do something well - they float. The slip part - not so much, especially when using flures (fly+lure) that weigh less than 4 grams. Joe R. came up with a ...

Re: Favorite UL line
Jeezus, I thought you were talking about UL! I figured with modern lines being so much thinner & stronger, the trend would be lighter, yet I only see a couple of folks fishing anything less than 3# - 4#! Stroft is great, though a little pricey and hard to find. Trilene XL 2# actually tests around 3#...

Re: New micro crank on the scene
Looks pretty cool. Just wondering, do you swap out stock hooks? Some of those trebles have huge wire sizes, making hook sets kind of difficult. I think Mustad, VMC, and a few others make open shank, double hooks with thinner wire. Thanks.

Re: ultralight nymph trout fishing
I tried the set up for trout in big streams here in pa with flowing water and the set up did not work well. You cannot use bobber as it pulls the nymphs to fast...In deep calm pool no problem but our pools are low and somewhat riffles etc which trout lay in and bobber going overhead scares trout..I ...

Re: ultralight nymph trout fishing
I just saw your response, and that may change things? With a seven foot leader in addition to the G30, casting doesn't sound like much fun? Especially with a 6 1/2' rod. That video was pretty painful to watch, I couldn't make it all the way through! I would suggest getting a copy of "Piscatorial Abs...

Re: ultralight nymph trout fishing
I think your concern about spooking the fish is real. That line looks huge! A fly line actually casts a pretty good shadow, even the clear ones on the market. Good luck.

Sorry, I can't figure out if you are fishing with a fly rod, or ultra-light spinning? Thanks

Re: Rapala finesse rods
A standard 6# fly line (just the main or head section) weighs around 10 - 11 grams. You would have to let out a lot of mono/fluoro to achieve that kind of weight. I think the only way you could mimic fly casting with BC is to leave the line spooled and cast the spool!
