Re: Your lightest Ultralight combo
You should be able to build a 6'6" rod at or under 1oz. I owned an Orivs 6'6" fly rod called the "One Ounce" 25 years ago that weighed one ounce. I used mine to death... and then sold it... sort of regret from time to time but not much... I was not using it and I believe in selling crap you don't us...

Re: Rod for light (1/64th ounce) jigs
I have found that most rods below 6 foot are either too slow to too fast... I think it is hard to manufacturer a rod that has a nice action below 6 foot... it can be done but it is rare. One of the most ignored parts of the rod when it comes to casting very light lures is guide selection. As much as...

Re: Finally broke one.
I have all my rods in cases.... Allen makes a great rod case that will handle up to 7ft rods for $40,,,, cheap protection if you are carrying a $200 rod.

Re: Rod for light (1/64th ounce) jigs
A rod that can truly throw 1/64th will never be a "fast" rod... it has to flex to throw the lure and it you are going to have to use light line which will require flex in the rod to protect the line.

Re: Five Footers
Daiwa Area Bum 56XXUL-S.... the most XUL rod I have held... a 8 inch trout feels good and anything over 12 inches feels like a wall hangers... will fish down to 8x with no problem. Use it often for stream trout and small bass. It is paired with a older Vanquish 1000, which is a small 1000... it was ...

Re: Shimano 500 reels
I bought a Daiwa SS when they first came out, more than 20 years ago... I had it hooked up with a Powell custom 5' UL stick (back when Powell made fly rods in California) and it was SWEET. The outfit was stolen when I was moving in college... IMHO, we live in the golden age of the UL spinning reel. ...

Re: Ultralight rods with micro thin tips
There are some fly rods that have tips as small as .035, St. Croix makes 2 that are that small... I guess that is the limit of tubular rod manufacturing... this is approaching JDM solid tip size... I played had a St.Croix 2 weight fly rod blank that was built up as a spinning rod and it was OK but n...

Re: Ultralight rods with micro thin tips
American fisherman are no where near as demanding as Japanese angles... The JDM rod makers are importing high end rods to America, just not UL stuff as they do not think the market for high end UL stuff is big enough in the US. Makers like Mega Bass are selling high end $200-$600 rods in the US. Jap...

Re: Ultralight rods with micro thin tips
I own many JDM rods... most with solid tips. One of which is the most delicate spinning rod I have ever held. Solid tips are THE answer to UL and XUL fishing. If you fish one, you will never go back. You can buy great rods from $110 or so... I have fished many Loomis and St. Croix rods and they are ...
